The Happy Hollows - Imaginary EP

The Happy Hollows are a indie rock/experimental band from California with a sound like a tornado of tunes. The grungy guitar melds with the constant crashing of the high hat and gives you a sense that everything is chaotic and the roof just might fall on your head. Lead singer Sarah Negahdari has a scream that can be compared to the infamous screams of Yeah Yeah Yeahs leading lady Karen O, and she lets it loose in the song "Tambourine." The songs "Labyrinth" and "Big Bad Wolf" almost have an eighties vibe that is highly reminescent of Athens rockers, the B-52's. While they are still categorized as rock their new stuff is almost too experimental and probably caters to a smaller and more specific audience. So check it out for yourself and see if you love or hate it.

Dignan - The Guest

Dignan gives you the feeling of drowning in a dark, cold pond of whispery lyrics and tinkling keyboards. You slowly float the bottom with a smile on your face because it is so deep and beautiful at the same time. "Tangled Woods" is a song that quite literally makes you feel as if you are lost in a tangled woods with a quiet accordion squeezing like a far-away wolf howling in the background. "Ships" is like setting sail in a blown-up rescue raft that is slowly leaking air. It has an overall tone of despair that only increases as you reach the end of the song; however, the layered lyrics and long accordion notes give it a fluid movement until the end, where the last few bubbles of air float to the surface. This album is truly a work of art that deserves a good listen.

Kyle Andrews - Live At Mercy Lounge

Kyle Andrews has an electro-pop, indie rock, retro thrift store sound that makes you want to dance. His words are soulful and beautiful and oddly complimentary of the electronic beats and fast paced piano tunes. Fans of electronic indie sweethearts Postal Service and the new, but well received, MGMT, will be overjoyed to discover Kyle Andrews. While songs like "Sushi" and "I Wanted to Paint a Rainbow" will make you tap your toes, he does have a more somber and serious side that he lets out in "Get Mad" and "Put Your Hands Up." So if you have one of those friends who just wants to sit in the dark and listen to brooding artists sing about pain and loss then pop this in your player and you can mope while you dance.

Lovedrug - Sucker Punched (Alt. LP)

Who is Lovedrug?

Lovedrug is a rock band from Cleveland, Ohio. The band consists of Micheal Shepard (vocals, piano, guitar), Jeremy Michael Gifford (guitar, synthesizer, piano), Thomas Bragg (bass), and James Childress (drums and percussion). The album they are giving away for free Sucker Punched (Alternate LP). It is a compilation of alternative takes from their newest album, The Sucker Punch Show.

They are firm believers in being able to play their music without the assistance of computers on stage. They are rock and roll purists.

What do they sound like?

The lead vocalist, Michael Shepard, has a very unique voice. I don’t believe I have ever heard anyone else who sounds quite the same. The first song I ever heard by Lovedrug was a cover of the Nirvana song, Heart Shaped Box. It was translated into a slow, piano based song, and while retaining the power and emotion of the original song, Lovedrug makes it into a completely new song.

Entertainment Weekly says about Lovedrug: "...somewhere between 70’s-style guitar-rock grandeur and pre-weird Radiohead lives this inebriated, quasi-hallucinatory tale."

Where can I see them?

Unless you live near Akron, Ohio or Upland, Indiana, you are out of luck for seeing Lovedrug play a live show in the United States. However, if you do live near Upland, Indiana, you have hit the Lovedrug jackpot, because they are playing a free show there on May 9th, 2009.

They also have a few shows scheduled in Germany and Switzerland for their European fans.
